Dayang Group grew during the China reform and opening-up policy period. Following the pace of the times, the company struggled hard and never forgot its mindset from the beginning. On June 28th 2018,Dalian mainstream media, organized by Dalian Municipal Bureau of Commerce, came to Dayang to interview the company on the theme of the 40th anniversary. A Group of people, a life of time, and one thing” was in a frame on the wall of the first floor at the company’s ‘Moda’ Factory. This is a motto president Li Guilian created and it has made quite a lasting impression. Today president Li Guilian is over 70 years old and she said “39 years has passed and Dayang has only been in the suit-making business our whole life” The development of Dayang is the epitome of China's reform and opening. I am not only a participant and witness, but also a beneficiary of China reform and opening. No matter how long it takes, I like to talk about it. Dayang group was developed from scratch by 85 peasant woman who were very dexterous.
It was thirty-nine years ago, but seems as if it is still in clear sight. At that time, the peasants did not have enough food to eat, and Li Guilian was wondering when she will become successful during that period of time. After the third full session of the 11th Central Committee, she saw the opportunity. To be in the clothing business is not that easy for a peasant living in the remote countryside area of Yang Shu Fang.
At that time, Li Guilian knew that talent was very important and that talent should come first. She arranged recruitment by offering a challenge. The challenge was very simple - finish sewing the Zhongshan garment within 2 hours. There were more than 600 candidates joining the recruitment process after hearing the recruitment news on the radio. Among them there were tailors and housewives. Eighty-five people were selected during the first recruitment period. Li Guilian said: They are the best ones. Dayang Group could not have survived without these 85 dexterous peasant women.
It's not surprising that the recruitment process was strict, but at that time people were confused about it."It is not certain whether the factory could be built up or not. How come the recruitment process is so strict?"These words could not bring Li Guilian down. After that she arranged three more recruitment sessions and offered free training for the employees. There were 300 villagers that joined the training session. Our first garment factory was set up in a 1000 square meter idle factory without windows. No one, including Li Guilian, thought that the garment factory that was founded to solve the problem of food and clothing would develop into what is Dayang Group today with 10 factories covering 2 million square meters. Now there are MTM garments sent all over the world every day.
At the beginning, there were no orders at all. Li Guilian went to Dalian Third Garment Factory to get some outsourcing work there. Understated peasants hoped they may become successful someday so they had high enthusiasm. We got more orders because of our high quality. In 1981,we started to receive orders from overseas.
In 1987,Li Guilian was awarded "Top Ten Farmer Entrepreneurs in China". In 1989,Li Guilian was awarded "National Labor Workers" by the State Department. In 1993, Dayang Group was formally founded. In 1997, Li Guilian was awarded the 1997 Bauhinia Cup China Outstanding Entrepreneur in Hong Kong. In 2000 Dayang Trands was officially established in the Shanghai Stock Exchange. In 2007, Dayang group was selected as “the Global Growth Company” in the world economic forum. In 2010, Li Guilian was elected as star of rising entrepreneurs for 30 years. In 2017, Dayang Group was awarded the title of National Advanced Standardization Company.
Li Guilian was enlightened from her first trip abroad:"Opening" and "Reform" are both important.
Li Guilian remembered this clearly the first time she went to Japan to study. She visited a Japanese garment factory. The Japanese proudly introduced their factory to her and she followed after them with one shock after another."Not only do they pay special attention to detail management, but also the working environment is very good." Li Guilian said. When she went back, she told the details of her visit to the whole factory staff immediately, so that everyone could know what the outside world was like. The workers were very excited and tried to make great progress going forward. Dayang had become the best clothing enterprise in the world after 39 years. The companies she followed now have begun to learn from her and they visit Dayang factories from time to time to learn our advantages."It's amazing that Dayang has had such great progress year after year. Around the world, Dayang has become the benchmark for apparel companies." said Qing Shanli, head of Japan's Aoyama, when he came here in June 2018.
In 1984, Li Guilian, was the only factory representative of Liaoning Province to attend the Hong Kong Clothing Exposition. The experience was eye-opening. She recognized that "opening" and "reform" were both important. Dayang must speed up the pace of development. Forty years has passed and by opening up, Dayang has changed the fate of a large group of workers.
25-year-old Wang Lin joined in Dayang in 1979 when she was just a peasant girl. She was one of the original 85 peasant women. She gained Li Guilian’s reliance for her hard work and meticulous attitude. Today she is Vice President of Dayang Group and there are four factories are under her management.60-year-old Zhao Jinyan is a Quality Control director of Dayang’s branch company.
Thirty-nine years ago she joined Dayang when she was only 21 years old and gave her whole life to Dayang Group. Although she encountered difficulties, she proved that her persistence was correct and this made her very happy. "I found my boyfriend here and we got married here as well. Now I have bought my own apartment and a car. I also got promoted to be a QC director from a sewer.”
During the first startup, those 85 peasant women were happy to just do some very easy and tedious work, such as sewing sleeve protectors, shoulder pads, and cushions. Even if they hadn't been paid for four months, and they received only 40 Yuan half a year later, they still stayed and stuck to the task at hand. This is because in their hearts, they had a beautiful dream - to be the national clothing brand and to build up an intelligent factory to seize the high-end MTM market share.
In order to achieve their goal, Dayang Group set up very demanding requirements. In early 1997, Dayang Group successfully passed the international ISO 9001 certification. The national standard alteration rate for handmade suits is 1%, while Dayang’s alteration rate for handmade suits is 0.01%.Today, Dayang Group has opened their "intelligent" factory, breaking through traditional development methods. We have achieved large-scale personalized MTM manufacturing through creating an intelligent production line. 80% of the production lines are intelligent lines.
There is an AVG Robot that is able to send the materials between production lines. The working procedures are recorded in the computer and factory workers will finish their work based on the requirements in the computer. Then the finished garment will be sent to the packaging department by a hanging rack system. The work efficiency is three times higher than before, and the cost of manpower is reduced by 30%.
It used to take half a month to make a suit. Now it only takes five days, helping the company seize the high-end MTM market share.
Although Li Guilian is over 70 years old, she knows everything about the intelligent factory and she often accompanies customers to visit the factory. Li Guilian has handed over leadership to Hu Dongmei who is the General Manager of Dayang Group, but she still deeply loves the place where she started her business and the 85 peasant women who started the business with her. She spares no effort to take care of them. She looks forward to seeing more partners join into our group and make a great marvel together.
